Story-in-Short:

Some powerful men-including performers of black magic, underworld gangsters, sleuths, extremist zealots and sellers of spirituality-chased a powerless, low caste man from a Kerala village through Mumbai, Karachi and Delhi till he finally escaped into the mountain ranges of Himalayas. All of them wanted to capture this man alive and keep him with them! however, none of these men could catch and keep this elusive man, as he always found his way to freedom. In the process of working out his escapes this man also unearthed some important mysteries of human life! why did some powerful men continuously chase a low caste man? How did the man always find his way to freedom? What are the riddles he solved while he was trying to escape from his captors? Wisdom of the white mountain is a suspenseful and adventurous story told in the cultural, spiritual and philosophical context of the South Asia. It is also about Karma, Kama and Jihad! it ultimately unravels greed and selfishness of powerful men who mix religion and politics to manipulate common people for advancing personal interests.

In my view:

Not everyone has a smooth life journey. There are difficulties and barriers all the way, countering which we have to move ahead. Difficulties, too, keep pouncing one after the other, leaving us in several perplexing and depressing situations. But what will you say of a life where peace, love and concord is far, far away, and difficulties are lined up to collapse one after the other. What will you say about a life where-in one’s existence is meant for being viciously used by someone or the other?

Well, Kandathil Sebastian’s second novel Wisdom Of The White Mountain has a story of a similar person, belonging to a very poor background and downtrodden every now and then.

The story is about Thomas, also called as Thoma, a sturdy Christian boy from a Kerala village, belonging to a low caste and a hooligan father. His biological father detests him and his survival, so much that he instantly agrees to sell him off to a tantrik for some black magic activity. Somehow, Thomas manages to escape the grubby place, along with his childhood pal Balu, only to land up in the custody of a hostile gangster. His vows don’t end here. He is then released at the hands of the terrorists, who plan a plot against India. In Karachi, Pakistan, he is trained to create havoc and lead to bloodbath during the Republic Day function in the capital New Delhi. From a Christian, he is also converted into Islam, by the traitors.

Despite all these people trying to use him for their personal motives, interestingly somehow, he manages to escape every bid so-far. Having experienced sporadic violence, his fear for life dismantles. Deprived of a caring family and love, which most of us require while passing through such phases of life, he lands up in the Himalayas to comprehend life and find a moment or two of peace there. Will he find what he is looking forward to, here? Will the vows of his life end? Read the book to find more.

Wisdom Of The White Mountain is an intriguing tale with a total thrill factor. It’s a touching and inspiring tale of Thomas, which I think everyone of us must read.

The cover-page is simple, yet perfect for the story. The narration is just too good and the narrative is extremely gripping. There are too many characters in the story, apart from the protagonist - however, the author has dealt with characterization perfectly, and nowhere does the story gets confusing.

The story is so well-written that readers will instantly and certainly connect well with it. The narration is so amazing that, at times, readers’ heart will go out for the protagonist Thomas.

We often cry and complain when problems and complications collapse on us. This book teaches one that, however difficult problems are, there is certainly a way out. It gives hope to those going through a difficult phase. It inspires one to experience the difficult phase, as it only makes one stronger and stronger. Over-all, the book is a wonderful work of fiction – a book all of us urgently need to read!

This book, without giving it a second thought, deserves a 4.75 from me! Hats-off to Kandathil sir for such a fabulous and fascinating story! I am now curiously waiting to hold the third book of this trilogy! Hope it is out soon!

NOTE: A review copy of the book was provided by the author.
