Yet some things are vacant

  • People protest over the recurring incidents of brutality against women.
India had previously united to protest against Jessica Lal murder case. Indians also stood firmly in endorse of Anna Hazare in Anti-Corruption movement. And now this is the third time when the entire nation re-united; all for one cause and the government could do nothing other than ordering police to wield batons and shower plentiful of water through canons on them.

The Delhi Gang rape victim who was brutally raped in a moving bus was battling for life at Safdargunj Hospital while on the other hand angry people protested against the liberalized Judiciary and the sleazy Police Force of the national captial. It was not such that only Delhi witnessed protests and candle light vigils. People across Mumbai, Banglore, Bengal, Chennai and almost all metropolitan cities witnessed bountiful agitation erupting out on streets, demanding justice for the victim. Everyone had a single demand and that was CHANGE. They wanted the change in the mindsets of the people, law of the country and the behavior of macho's. When Subhash Tomar, a constable posted at a location of massive protest died, the blame was shifted on to the protestors. I was unable to understand the reason behind shifting the blame onto the protestors because when people possess rights to protest why did the Police force interfere and forbade them? Why the police lay hold on the protestors and turned red with those who were demanding strict actions against the law breakers?

After battling for two weeks, the day when the victim succumbed to her injuries at Mount Elizabeth in Singapore, protests multiplied and moved outside the house of Mrs. Sheela Dixit, the Delhi Chief Minister. The police reached there within no time and removed the protestor out from there - thus the Chief Minister was safe and the people… people in Delhi are still unsafe. More than showing care and concern for the unsafe female section, they (the government) are more bothered about their luxurious houses and their post. The protestors were not allowed to protest outside the houses of minister’s. Something that these ministers should understand is that no person wants to bunk their office, cut-off their salary, run on streets and protest unless the cruelty reaches at the height with the government simply remaining silent.

If the government would have strengthened the law against the evil men of society then today the victim would have been alive and no one would have dared to rape or molest any girl or women in our 'incredible country'. The protests erupted only because the country was tired of recurring attacks on the women. No son wanted his mother to face it, no father wanted his daughter, no brother wanted his sister and no male friend wanted his female friend to face the cruelty of eve-teasing, molestation and rape. They all wanted evil men to be in their limits and indeed they all ascertain rights for it. Our government needs to focus on the issues such as the safety of women and girls that is dwindling with every passing day. Still there are some, in the parts of the country, who think women are on this planet to fulfill the manly desires. In their gigantic parties, ministers call girls and force them to turn nude and entertain the other males in exchange of money. Many tycoons are still going to the red light areas and are increasing prostitution in the country.

Firstly, the law should be strengthened and the one who doesn't abide by them should be pronounced with strict punishments. Secondly, all those women and girl’s trapped in the racket’s should be rescued, provided with good education and appreciable counseling should be given to them in the government N.G.O’s. Government should also keep a watch on those ministers who force on girls in their parties and must warn them. Even if they don’t improve on warnings they should be equivalently punished. And thirdly, the topics such as respecting women and girls should be added in the syllabus so that youngsters learn these etiquette's right from the beginning. It is only when efforts are taken, the scenario will change and our grandmothers, mothers, aunt’s, sisters and female friends will feel safer in the city.
